Social media is constantly becoming part of every day more and more. In 2018, librarians at Purdue University conducted a survey to see if students want academic libraries on social media. Purdue University wanted to promote that libraries have more purpose than the traditional. Students would benefit to know about the special services, events, collections, and logistics of their library. And social media is a good place to reach students.
Results of the survey show the most used platforms are YouTube, Facebook, Snapchat, and Twitter. They are mostly used for getting news, keeping in touch, and watching videos. The results of the survey suggest that students would like to see logistics and campus information/events on Facebook. On Pinterest, how to use library services and databases. And they’d like to see research tips on YouTube. They did point out setbacks where the survey was full of students that were already library users. The survey also used terms that librarians commonly use.
The conclusion of the survey is there is a need to push for more communication. It’s beneficial to increase social media presence, especially for logistics, news of events, and videos of how to use online library services.
Modern libraries, both academic and public, would benefit from using Instagram and its story features for quick logistical and event news. TikTok is also a good platform for making informative short videos.
