Find a place in your community where residents of all ages and income can come and enjoy listening to interesting people discuss new books, ideas, and many other topics. Is there some place close by, where you can have free access to databases and the internet, take home a book or movie for free, and apply for a job? These are all services or activities that can take place at the public library. The public library is not just about books, critical thinking, and information skills. They are also about active learning, creative spaces, and making good choices.
Today libraries are a hub for so many activities and services. Some of these activities include study groups for all ages, children’s reading hour, author book signings and readings, holiday events, special needs services, tutoring services, internet access to the public, just to mention a few. For the many patrons who engage in these activities the library becomes a gathering space for the community and new friendships can develop. While libraries today have cafes, auditoriums, classes and knitting circles, physical books remain at the heart of our mission – and always will (Wolke).
